Primary Functions
Director of Development leads and implements a strategic approach to fundraising which includes major gifts, corporate sponsorships, grants, foundations, individuals, in-kind resources, special events, and general fundraising, ensuring effective integration of fundraising in the organization’s overall plan and efforts.  
Primary Duties

  • Work closely with Aspen Chapel team to plan, implement, and coordinate effective multi-year strategies and plans for major gift prospects, including corporate, foundation, grants, and/or individual donors
  • Develop and implement strategies for identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major donors and prospects capable of making gifts in the $5,000 and above
  • Pursue ongoing opportunities for contact with past and current donors, including drafting and distributing tailored program updates and coordinating donor visits
  • Initiate and participate in writing appeals (both print and e-appeals) 
  • Manage and execute the writing of grants and corporate sponsorship proposals
  • Manage the planning and execution of special fundraising events
  • Conduct individual donor research 
  • Manage the donor database and planning ‘stewardship’ strategies for each donor so as to maximize giving
  • Track donor electronic evergreen contributions on a monthly basis to ensure that expired credit cards are updated·      Identify other donor opportunities for our 50th celebration, including marriages, baptisms, memorials
  • Function as a liaison to external partnerships, soliciting support and developing relationships, particularly in maximizing our 50th anniversary
  • Manage and execute systems for gift entry and donor acknowledgment, ensuring that every donor receives prompt acknowledgment for their contribution
  • Manage the fundraising calendar
  • Ongoing coordination with bookkeeper & finance committee to ensure donor entries are correctly recorded in financial statements & donor management software.
  • Design & produce donor reports on an as needed basis for Chapel development & finance committees.
  • Attend Board meetings and serve as liaison for Board members’ and donors’ inquiries
  • Implement the development plan in accordance with ethical fundraising principles


  • Work with Aspen Chapel team to develop a budget for annual income and expenditures for the development program
  • Monitor and evaluate all fundraising activities to ensure that the fundraising goals are achieved
  • Conduct preliminary research on prospective corporate, foundation and grant and individual donors that help support the development plan
  • Process donations on a regular basis and prepare acknowledgment letters and other correspondence to donors
  • Oversee the administration of a donor mailing list and database which respects the privacy and confidentiality of donor information
  • Coordinate the production and mailing of appeal letters
  • Respond to general inquiries regarding donations, pledge commitments, and partnership opportunities
  • Maintain administrative tools including prospect spreadsheets, appeal letter solicitations, and tools for tracking income and progress toward fundraising goals
  • Attend strategic development meetings and record notes
  • Other responsibilities assigned.

Desired Skills & Experience 

  • A college degree + 3 years of development experience 
  • Active and strong leadership qualities
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge of fundraising management
  • Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with internal constituents including principal gift, corporate and foundation relationship managers
  • Experience in asking for and closing major or planned gifts of $5,000 or more
  • Experience in managing and tracking multiple fundraising opportunities
  • Knowledge of federal and state legislation affecting charities
  • Experience in special event planning and management
  • Aptitude for computers, computer software, and other types of office equipment
  • The ability to work independently
  • Exceptional attention to detail


  • Adherence to the highest standards of ethics & confidentiality in the conduct of duties &     responsibilities 
  • Certification in Fundraising Management or Executive (CFRE) designation
  • Capital Campaign experience
  • A full-time resident of the Roaring Fork Valley
